SUMMARY:Stone Soup Farm - Harvest Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the apple harvest with us\, discovering what life was like working and living on a late 19th-century farm. Enjoy the daily adventures of a homesteading family\, learning from their skills and craftsmanship. Drop by the old cider press and partake in making your juice. We’ll visit the heirloom corn and pumpkin patch and bring in the harvest together.  \n \nWhen is it?\nNovember 21\, 2019\, 10:00am – 1:30p \nWhere is it?\nStone Soup Farms\n12131 S. Oak Glen Rd\nOak Glen\, CA 92399 \n \nWhat to Expect \nChildren are introduced to a variety of workshops and activities led by people working on a 19th-century farm. Join them in learning about the trades and responsibilities of apple farmers and how people in the past relied on one another for products and survival. This content-rich program will have children expend excess energy as they perform hands-on activities at several stations in our historic orchard and provide follow up materials enabling further education. \nAs enthusiasts of the American past\, Stone Soup Farm has developed educational programs exploring significant historical themes from the unique perspective of farmers\, pioneers\, and leading figures\, enriching Americans’ understanding of their heritage. With a hands-on approach to history\, our interpreters provide insight into agrarian living while students are engaged in keeping centuries-old traditions alive. \nProgram Activities May Include\n\n\n\n\n\nMaking traditional apple crisp\nSeasonal cooking workshop and food preservation\nApple coring and peeling\nCoffee grinding and helping with kitchen chores\nCider pressing and tasting\nOrchard tour and discussion on regional apple farming history\nVisit the corn and pumpkin garden\nCorn grinding and shucking\nDiscussion on homestead trades\nDipping a candle to take home\n19th-century games\n\n\n\n\n\nWeather\nStone Soup Farm & Heritage Orchard field trips take place rain or shine. Please\, monitor the weather and dress appropriately for outdoor activities.  \nParking & Directions\nAs always\, we encourage car-pools.  Parking will be along Oak Glen Road. There are wide margins for vehicle parking\, cars are not allowed into the front orchard. Please note our sign and do not park at Riley’s Farm\, as we are not the same farm. \nFrom Los Angeles & Points West:\nTake the I-10 towards Palm Spring. Exit on Cherry Valley Blvd\, turn left. Proceed until you reach Beaumont Avenue\, turn left. Proceed past the sign that reads “Welcome to Oak Glen.” (Beaumont Ave./Road will become Oak Glen Road.) We will be located on the right-hand side\, near Willowbrook Farm. \n  \nFAQ’S\nCan we purchase food at the farm? \nAs a working historic farm\, we currently do not offer food for purchase but hope to do so soon. \nDo we bring a packed lunch? \nYes\, and we will provide a picnicking area for lunch. \nDo I need to be with my group? \nYes\, and we ask that you keep the group together. Each group will be directed to stations throughout the program. \nIs there a store on the premises? \nThere will be an authentic Mercantile Tent Store\, from which students will be able to purchase souvenirs.

It is the only living Chumash cultural village of its kind in Southern California. \nDuring our field trip to Wishtoyo\, we will get to experience a ceremony in sil’i’yik by the sacred fire\, tour and learn about a typical day in a Chumash village\, including tasks like house building\, clothes making and food preparation using natural resources. We will also listen to traditional stories and songs in ‘ap (traditional Chumash dwelling). After the tour\, we will head down the path to the beach to enjoy some play time with friends and possibly explore tide pools (if the tide is low). Please bring your own lunch and beach gear. \nPlease park along Pacific Coast Hwy just before Nicholas Canyon State Beach and walk down past the yellow gate to the Village. \nHere is a beautiful video of the Village and it’s elder\, Mati Waiya: \n \nMalibu Stories Episode 7 – Mati Waiya from Jay Armitage on Vimeo. \nMore information about the Wishtoyo Chumash Foundation can be found at their website:  http://www.wishtoyo.org \nWe are looking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Celebration 2017
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Summer Solstice Celebration!\nWe will come together to enjoy the longest day and shortest night on this turning point in the year!  We will honor this time of year with an afternoon of beach play and beach combing\, a seasonal story\, sand craft\, bonfire\, music\, singing and dancing! \nWhat is the Summer Solstice Celebration 2017?\nSummer Solstice is an ancient holiday. The word solstice is derived from Latin meaning sun (sol) and to stand still (sistere) for the time in which the sun appears to stand still moving neither north nor south for several days. After which the sun begins its journey south while the earth is just beginning to heat up and begin to bring forth the life that awakened at spring. \nCrafting Together\nTraditionally\, Threefold Village gatherings feature a craft.  For the Summer Solstice Gathering the group will be forming a Sun Sand Mandala using beach treasures found along the shore\, following a children’s story by Shawna Campbell. Please collect shells\, stones\, driftwood\, sea plants\, and other natural beach treasures as a family. We will create the mandala collectively; we encourage families to add the the piece together. It will be exciting to see what we create as a group! \nBonfire at Sunset\, Dockweiler Beach\nBonfire: Warmth and Light\nWe are excited to have\, Apprentice of the Wild mentor\, Sean Critchfield share a simple story and work with the children to light the bonfire using primitive methods. Once blazing\, we will come together to sing songs around the bonfire. For your reference\, below is a list of songs that we may be singing. \n\nThree Little Birds\, Bob Marley\nThis Little Light of Mine\nYou are my Sunshine\nLet it Be\n\nWe encourage everyone to refresh their minds with the lyrics so we can all join in as a group to sing together! Of course\, you should feel free to bring small drums/instruments to play along!  As part of the tradition dried herb bundles will be provided to be thrown into the bonfire. \n  \nTo learn more and REGISTER: \nSummer Solstice – June 20\, 2017 \n \n
